Installing & Updating WizardGenie

Updated July 4, 2026Open the tool

WizardGenie is available from the WizardGenie page. The desktop app keeps your projects and settings on your computer, opens directly into your last project when possible, and includes an update area for checking your installed version.

This page explains how to install WizardGenie, how updates work on Windows and macOS, what happens to your projects during updates, and what to do if an update or sign-in window appears to be stuck.

What you need

  • A supported desktop computer.
  • An internet connection for downloading the installer, signing in to Sorceress, and checking for updates.
  • Permission to install desktop apps on your computer.
  • A Sorceress account if you want to use Sorceress-connected features from inside WizardGenie.

Install WizardGenie on Windows

  1. Open the WizardGenie page.
  2. Download the latest Windows installer.
  3. Run the downloaded installer.
  4. If Windows asks whether you want to allow the installer to make changes, choose Yes.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.
  6. Launch WizardGenie from the Start menu or desktop shortcut, depending on your installation choices.

When WizardGenie opens for the first time, it creates a default local game project if you have not opened one before. On later launches, it reopens your most recently used project when possible.

Install WizardGenie on macOS

macOS builds currently use manual updates rather than automatic in-app installation.

  1. Open the WizardGenie page.
  2. Download the latest macOS build if one is available for your account.
  3. Open the downloaded app package.
  4. If macOS blocks the app because it was downloaded from the internet, use your normal macOS security flow to allow the app to open.
  5. Launch WizardGenie.

To update on macOS, download the newest version again from the WizardGenie page and replace your existing copy.

What happens on first launch

On startup, WizardGenie looks for the last project you used. If that project still exists, the app opens it automatically. If you have never opened a project before, or if the previous project folder was moved or deleted, WizardGenie creates or opens a default local project.

WizardGenie also keeps a recent-projects list. If a recent project folder no longer exists, WizardGenie removes that stale entry from the list the next time it checks recent projects.

Updating WizardGenie on Windows

WizardGenie for Windows includes an in-app update system.

Automatic update check

In packaged Windows builds, WizardGenie automatically checks for updates shortly after launch. If a newer version is available, the app can notify you and let you download it.

Updates are not downloaded automatically. You stay in control of when to download and install the update.

Manual update check

Use the app’s update menu to check manually when you want to confirm you are current.

  1. Open WizardGenie.
  2. Open the update menu or about/update area.
  3. Choose the option to check for updates.
  4. Wait for the status message.

Common update statuses include:

  • Checking — WizardGenie is contacting the update service.
  • Up to date — your installed version is current.
  • Update available — a newer version can be downloaded.
  • Downloading — the update is being downloaded. The update area may show progress.
  • Ready — the update has downloaded and can be installed.
  • Manual — your platform uses manual downloads instead of automatic installation.
  • Error — WizardGenie could not complete the update check or download. The message may indicate a connection problem or another update issue.

Download and install an update

When WizardGenie reports that an update is available:

  1. Choose the download option in the update menu.
  2. Keep WizardGenie open while the download completes.
  3. When the update is ready, choose the install/restart option if prompted.
  4. WizardGenie will quit and relaunch into the new version.

On Windows, downloaded updates are also prepared so they can be applied when the app quits.

Updating WizardGenie on macOS

WizardGenie does not currently apply macOS updates automatically from inside the app. If the update menu indicates manual updating:

  1. Open the WizardGenie page.
  2. Download the latest macOS version.
  3. Quit WizardGenie.
  4. Replace your existing app with the new download.
  5. Launch WizardGenie again.

Your normal app data, project history, and sign-in state are stored separately from the app package, so replacing the app should not remove your projects.

Check your installed version

WizardGenie can report the currently installed app version from its update/about area. Use this when comparing your installed copy with the latest available download.

If you are reporting a bug, include:

  • Your WizardGenie version.
  • Your operating system.
  • Whether you installed from a fresh download or updated from inside the app.
  • What the update menu currently says, if relevant.

Sign in after installation

Some WizardGenie panels connect to Sorceress. If you are not signed in, the app can open a Sorceress sign-in window.

  1. Click the sign-in option inside WizardGenie.
  2. Complete sign-in in the popup window.
  3. Wait for the popup to close or return you to the app.
  4. WizardGenie will refresh Sorceress-connected panels after successful sign-in.

When the sign-in window opens, it first shows a loading screen while WizardGenie connects to Sorceress. If it cannot load the login page, the window shows a Could not connect message with a Try Again button.

If the sign-in window cannot load, check that sorceress.games opens normally in your regular browser, then try again. Firewalls, antivirus software, VPNs, or restrictive school/work networks can prevent the embedded sign-in window from reaching Sorceress.

Signing out

WizardGenie can sign out of Sorceress-connected panels from inside the app. Signing out clears the app’s Sorceress sign-in session and refreshes Sorceress-connected panels so they return to a signed-out state.

This does not remove your local WizardGenie projects.

Projects and settings during updates

Updating WizardGenie should not delete your projects. WizardGenie projects are local folders separate from the app installation.

WizardGenie remembers:

  • The most recently opened project.
  • A recent-projects list.
  • App settings stored separately from the installed application.
  • Sorceress sign-in state, when available.

To avoid confusion during an update:

  • Save any work before installing an update.
  • Let the update finish before force-closing the app.
  • If you keep projects in cloud-synced folders, wait for your sync provider to finish before launching a new version.
  • If a project no longer appears in recent projects, use the project open command and select the project folder manually.
  • If WizardGenie opens a default project after updating, your previous project folder may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Open it manually from its current location.

Opening WizardGenie more than once

The normal desktop app is designed to focus the already-open WizardGenie window if you try to launch it again. This helps prevent accidental duplicate sessions editing the same project.

If the app is minimized and you launch it again, WizardGenie should restore and focus the existing window.

Troubleshooting updates

The update menu stays on “Checking”

Try these steps:

  1. Wait a minute in case the update service is slow.
  2. Fully quit WizardGenie and reopen it.
  3. Check your internet connection.
  4. Make sure security software, a VPN, or a corporate network is not blocking WizardGenie.
  5. If it still does not clear, download the latest installer manually from the WizardGenie page and install over your current copy.

WizardGenie says there is no internet connection

The app could not reach the update service.

  • Confirm that websites load in your browser.
  • Try a different network if you are on a restricted school, work, or public network.
  • Temporarily disable VPN filtering if your VPN blocks app update traffic.
  • Allow WizardGenie through your firewall or antivirus if prompted.

The update downloaded but did not install

  1. Quit WizardGenie completely.
  2. Reopen WizardGenie and check the update menu again.
  3. If the update is still ready, choose the install option again.
  4. If it still does not apply, download and run the latest installer manually.

The app opens, then returns to the previous version

This usually means the update did not complete successfully.

  • Run the latest installer manually.
  • Make sure WizardGenie is fully closed before reinstalling.
  • Restart your computer if Windows says the app is still running.

The sign-in window says it cannot connect

WizardGenie was unable to load the Sorceress login page.

  • Open sorceress.games in your regular browser to confirm the site is reachable.
  • Check firewall, antivirus, VPN, or network filtering.
  • Close the sign-in popup and try again.
  • Use the Try Again button if the sign-in window shows one.
  • Restart WizardGenie if the sign-in state does not refresh after a successful login.

I signed in, but WizardGenie still looks signed out

Try the following:

  1. Wait a few seconds after the sign-in window closes.
  2. Refresh or reopen the Sorceress-connected panel you were using.
  3. Sign out from inside WizardGenie, then sign in again.
  4. Fully quit and reopen WizardGenie.
  5. Confirm that sorceress.games works in your normal browser.

WizardGenie refreshes Sorceress-connected panels after successful sign-in, but a blocked network request or interrupted sign-in flow can prevent the app from confirming the session immediately.

My recent project is missing

WizardGenie removes recent-project entries that point to folders that no longer exist. If a project was moved or renamed, open it manually from its new location. Once opened, it will be added back to the recent-projects list.

WizardGenie opened a default project instead of my game

This usually means the app could not find the last project folder. Use the project open command to select your project folder manually. If the project is stored in a cloud-synced location, make sure the folder is fully available on your computer before launching WizardGenie.

FAQ

Do I need to uninstall before updating?

Usually no. On Windows, you can use the in-app update flow or run the latest installer over your existing installation. On macOS, replace the old app with the new download.

Will updating remove my projects?

No. WizardGenie projects are local folders separate from the app installation. Updating the app should not delete them.

Why does macOS say updates are manual?

The macOS build currently does not use the automatic installer flow. Download the latest version from the WizardGenie page when you want to update.

Can I run more than one copy of WizardGenie?

The normal app is designed to focus the already-open window if you try to launch it again. This prevents accidental duplicate sessions editing the same project.

Where do I get the newest version?

Always start from the WizardGenie page.

Does updating affect my Sorceress account?

No. Updating the desktop app does not change your Sorceress account. You may need to sign in again if your session expires or if you sign out manually.

What should I include when asking for help?

Include your operating system, WizardGenie version, whether you installed fresh or updated in-app, what the update menu says, and any visible error message from the sign-in or update window.
