BG Remover

Updated July 4, 2026Open the tool

BG Remover is an AI-powered cutout tool for removing image backgrounds and exporting transparent PNG results. It is designed for quick asset cleanup: character renders, item icons, product-style images, UI elements, and other artwork that you want to place over a new background in a game, mockup, or design.

Open BG Remover

What it does

BG Remover takes an uploaded image and produces a new version with the background removed. Completed cutouts are shown on a checkerboard transparency preview so you can clearly see which parts of the image are transparent.

You can process one image at a time or upload multiple images and process them as a batch. The tool keeps a gallery of processed images for signed-in users, and it can also show demo results when you are browsing without signing in.

Key features

  • Single-image background removal — upload one image and remove its background.
  • Batch processing — upload multiple images, review the queue, then process the whole set.
  • Drag-and-drop upload — drop images directly onto the upload area.
  • Image file support — accepts common image uploads such as PNG, JPG/JPEG, and WebP.
  • 5 MB per-image upload limit — oversized files are skipped and listed in an error message.
  • Transparent result preview — completed cutouts appear over a checkerboard background in the gallery and lightbox.
  • Download as PNG — download individual cutouts as transparent PNG files.
  • Download recent batch — after a run, download all completed images from the most recent batch.
  • Processed-image gallery — signed-in users can see recent BG Remover results when returning to the tool.
  • Lightbox viewer — open a completed image for a larger preview, download, delete, or move between results.
  • Gallery density control on desktop — adjust the processed-image grid from 2 to 6 columns.
  • Mobile Upload and Results panels — on smaller screens, use the top tabs to open the upload controls or recent results.
  • WizardGenie hand-off support — when BG Remover is opened inside WizardGenie, completed cutouts can be dragged back into WizardGenie.

Requirements and limits

Sign-in requirement

You must be signed in to process images. If you are not signed in, you may still be able to view the interface and demo results, but the processing button changes to Sign In to Process and background removal cannot start until you sign in.

File size limit

Each uploaded image must be 5 MB or smaller. Files above this limit are skipped. BG Remover shows a Files Too Large message listing the files that were not added to the queue.

Accepted file types

The upload control accepts image files. Common choices include:

  • PNG
  • JPG / JPEG
  • WebP

Non-image files are ignored and do not appear in the Ready queue.

Typical workflow

  1. Open BG Remover.
  2. Sign in if you are not already signed in.
  3. In the Remove Backgrounds panel, either:
    • click the upload box to browse for image files, or
    • drag and drop images onto the upload box.
  4. Review the Ready queue. Each accepted image appears as a small preview.
  5. Optional: remove any queued image with its remove button, or click Clear to empty the queue.
  6. Start processing:
    • If one image is queued, click Remove Background.
    • If multiple images are queued, click Process All Images.
  7. Watch the gallery. In-progress items display a processing indicator.
  8. When a result completes, click it to open the larger preview.
  9. Download the transparent cutout using Download PNG, or use the download button on the gallery item.

Uploading images

The upload area is in the left Remove Backgrounds panel on desktop. On mobile, tap Upload at the top of the screen to open the upload panel.

To add images:

  • Click Drop images or click to browse and select one or more files.
  • Or drag image files from your computer and drop them onto the upload area.
  • If you are using BG Remover from a supported Sorceress or WizardGenie workflow, images may also be handed into the tool automatically or dropped from the surrounding workspace.

Accepted images are added to the Ready queue. The queue shows thumbnail previews in a compact grid. Hover a queued image and click its remove control to remove only that image, or click Clear to remove every queued image before processing.

If an uploaded file is too large, it is skipped instead of being added to the queue. If several files are too large, the error message lists each skipped filename.

Batch processing

BG Remover can process more than one image in a single run.

To process a batch:

  1. Upload two or more supported image files.
  2. Confirm the Ready count in the upload panel.
  3. Click Process All Images.
  4. Watch the processing progress indicator in the upload panel.
  5. Results appear in the main Processed Images gallery and in the Recent Results panel.

The Recent Results panel tracks the most recent run. It can contain completed, processing, or failed items while the batch is still settling. Once at least one image from that run is complete, the panel shows a Download All button.

Viewing and managing results

The main area of the tool is the Processed Images gallery. It contains your BG Remover outputs, with the newest results appearing first.

If no results are available, the gallery shows No images processed yet and prompts you to upload an image to get started.

Each result card uses the image’s original aspect ratio and can show one of three visible states:

  • Processing... — the cutout is still being prepared.
  • Completed — the cutout is ready to view and download.
  • Failed — the image could not be processed; the card shows an error message and a Remove option.

Completed images are displayed over a checkerboard pattern. The checkerboard is only a transparency preview aid; it is not part of the downloaded PNG.

Hover a completed gallery card to reveal quick actions:

  • Download — downloads that cutout as a PNG.
  • Delete — removes the result from your gallery.

On desktop, the gallery header includes a Grid slider. Use it to change the gallery from 2 to 6 columns. The current column count is shown beside the slider.

On mobile, the gallery uses a single-column layout for readability.

Click any completed image to open it in the fullscreen lightbox. The lightbox shows a larger version of the transparent cutout over a checkerboard background and labels it Background Removed.

In the lightbox you can:

  • use Download PNG to save the cutout,
  • use Delete to remove the result,
  • click the close button or outside the preview to close it,
  • use the previous and next controls to move through completed results,
  • press Esc to close the preview,
  • press the left and right arrow keys to move between completed results.

Failed and in-progress items do not open in the lightbox.

Downloading results

Download one image

You can download a completed result in either of these ways:

  • Hover over a completed gallery image and click the download button.
  • Click a completed image to open the lightbox, then click Download PNG.

Downloaded files are PNG cutouts intended to preserve transparency.

Download the most recent batch

After processing one or more images, open the Recent Results panel and click Download All. BG Remover downloads each completed image from the most recent run.

If some items from the recent run are still processing or failed, only the completed images are included in the download-all action.

Deleting results

You can delete a result from either the gallery or the lightbox.

  • In the gallery, hover the completed item and click the delete button.
  • In the lightbox, click Delete.
  • For failed items, click Remove on the failed card.

Deleting removes the item from your BG Remover gallery. If you delete the image currently open in the lightbox, the lightbox closes.

Using BG Remover with WizardGenie

When BG Remover is opened inside WizardGenie, completed cutouts can be dragged back into WizardGenie.

In this embedded mode:

  • completed gallery items can be dragged,
  • the lightbox may show a Drag to WizardGenie Explorer button,
  • dragging a completed cutout sends the transparent result back to the WizardGenie workspace.

Only completed images can be dragged. Processing or failed items cannot be handed off.

Using BG Remover on mobile

On small screens, BG Remover uses a top tab strip with two panels:

  • Upload — opens the upload controls and pending-file queue.
  • Results — opens the recent batch results panel.

Tap a tab to open its panel. Tap it again, or tap outside the panel, to close it. The main processed-image gallery remains available behind the panels.

The mobile gallery is shown as a single column, and the desktop grid-density slider is hidden.

Tips for best results

  • Use images where the subject is visually distinct from the background.
  • Avoid very busy backgrounds when possible.
  • For characters, props, and item icons, leave a little space around the subject instead of cropping extremely tightly.
  • Use the cleanest source image you have, while staying under the 5 MB limit.
  • If an image fails, try exporting it again as a standard PNG, JPG, or WebP and upload the new copy.
  • For large batches or a new art style, test with a small set first so you can evaluate the cutout quality before processing many images.
  • Download important finished cutouts after processing, especially if you plan to use them outside Sorceress or WizardGenie.

Troubleshooting

The button says “Sign In to Process”

You need to be signed in before BG Remover can process images. Sign in, then return to the tool and try again.

“Files Too Large”

One or more uploaded files exceeded the 5 MB per-file limit. Those files were skipped. Reduce the file size, export a smaller version, or compress the image, then upload again.

My file did not appear in the Ready queue

Check that the file is an image and that it is 5 MB or smaller. Non-image files are ignored. If the file is a less common image type, try exporting it as PNG, JPG/JPEG, or WebP.

A result failed

A failed result can happen if the image could not be processed. Remove the failed item from the gallery and try again. If the same image fails repeatedly, re-export it in a common image format or try a simpler source image with a clearer subject.

Processing is taking a long time

Processing time can vary based on image complexity and service load. Leave the page open while the item is processing. If processing cannot finish, the item may show as failed with an error message.

I clicked Download All but only some files downloaded

Download All only includes completed images from the most recent run. Items that are still processing or failed are skipped.

Why is there a checkerboard behind my image?

The checkerboard indicates transparent areas in the preview. It is not part of the downloaded image.
